Moray eels have large mouths that reach behind the eyes and are equipped with sharp teeth. From their appearance, moray eels have a ferocious personality and are known as the uncontrollable gangsters of the sea when they get violent. However, unlike their appearance, moray eels are timid and will not bite unless humans attack or approach them unnecessarily. If you encounter a moray eel while diving, keep your distance and move away slowly to avoid being attacked. Moray eels are actually nocturnal and timid fish, but if provoked they may attack. Moray eels are unique because they can breathe through their skin, so they can survive on land for about 30 minutes.
ウツボは口が大きく目の後方まで達し、鋭い歯が発達しています。外見からウツボは獰猛な性格の持ち主で、暴れると手に負えない海のギャングと呼ばれています。でもウツボは見た目のイメージと違い臆病な所があり、人間から無用な攻撃や接近をしなければ噛み付いてくることはありません。ダイビングでウツボと遭遇した時は距離を置き、ゆっくりと離れれば攻撃を受けることはありません。実際にウツボは夜行性で臆病な魚ですが、刺激を与えると攻撃してくるかもしれません。ウツボの特色は皮膚呼吸が可能な魚なので30分くらいは陸上でも生きることができます

ウツボの周囲にはホンソメワケベラなどが見られます。これらはウツボ類の寄生虫を掃除することでウツボ類と共生します。それでウツボもこれらの小動物を捕食することはありません。最近の研究ではイセエビ類とも共生の関係があります。イセエビは天敵であるタコから守ってもらえ、ウツボの方は大好物のタコがイセエビを食べようと自分から寄ってきてくれるからです。
