トビイカは亜熱帯地方に生息するアカイカ科に属するイカで全長30cm。トビイカが飛行するのはイルカのジャンプやトビウオの滑空とは違います。ジェット噴射です。水中を高速で泳ぎ、水を勢いよく吐き出して水面から飛び出ます。水を空中でも噴射し続けて加速し、広げた脚とヒレが翼の役割を担い、浮き上がるための揚力を得、最後に脚をたたみ、姿勢を低くして着水します。約3秒ほど飛行可能で、飛行距離は30メートルから50メートル。トビイカは全長30cmですが、実際に飛べるのは20cmの若いイカだけ。

トビイカほではありませんが同じアカイカ科のスルメイカJapanese flying squidも空を飛べます。現在日本ではイカの漁獲量が減少している中で亜熱帯地域のトビイカが注目されています。
元々沖縄では食べられていましたが、トビイカは新たな加工原料として東北の水産関係者の期待を集めています。
北海道や青森の水産業者は「刺身はスルメイカよりも硬い食感」、「刺身でも加熱してもスルメイカのような甘みは少ない」。
それでも「一夜干しやローストなど、加熱すれば加工原料として問題なく使える」と期待されています。
空飛ぶイカが食卓に上るかもしれません。
