Bluestreak cleaner wrasse (Labroides dimidiatus) is a small 12cm fish with blue and black stripes. It is famous as a wrasse that cleans parasites from fish. This fish is commonly seen while diving on the Izu Peninsula in Japan.

The latest research has reported that the Bluestreak cleaner wrasse can recognize itself. The mirror test is an experiment in which a mark is placed on an animal’s body and placed in front of a mirror to see if the animal examines the mark with its own body or tries to touch it.
This is because the animal understood that the mark reflected in the mirror was its own mark and not that of another individual. Until now, only chimpanzees, dolphins, elephants, and magpies have passed the mirror test. In a mirror test, the fish wrasse was listed as the most intelligent animal.

I have observed small fish becoming completely rigid and stopping their movements so as not to startle the wrasse.
